Peace via Cookie

I just baked World Peace Cookies. They’re the most chocolate-y cookies I ever tasted, I think, and I have to agree with Dorie Greenspan‘s neighbour who “became convinced that a daily dose of these cookies was all that is needed to ensure planetary peace and happiness.”

Garret, I would send you some for your birthday today, but as it is impossible to attach cookies to e-mails, you’ll have to get your lovely wife to bake you some! ;-)

    Rescueing the miners in Chile

    Today is the day: After 69 days the miners in Chile are being rescued, and it looks like everything is going smoothly so far. 21 of the 33 trapped miners have been brought to the surface.
    Update: They all made it out safely.

    I’ve tuned into BBC News Live: Joy as Chile miners reach surface from time to time today and must say that it’s very moving to see one miner after the other being rescued through this hole in the ground that looks shockingly tiny. The capsule called Phoenix has a diameter of only 55cm (less than 22in) – now imagine being trapped in there while being pulled upwards through a hole in the rock not much wider than that and 622m long! If you find that hard to imagine, the BBC has a picture of the shaft and a person to scale on the page linked above.
