We recently got a new coatrack for our vestibule, and since it is the first thing you see when you enter the house I thought it could use a colorful table runner. I finally used some of my prized stack of Barcelona by Zen Chic aka Brigitte Heitland that I’ve been saving for years. Not the fat quarters I talked about last year when I met the designer herself at a fair, but a charm pack.
Th project was inspired by the easy charm pack baby quilt.

NPR: A Tenn. Man Recently Discovered The Largest Prime Number Known To Humankind. “This past week, a FedEx employee from Germantown, Tenn., made a massive discovery — and it wasn’t in any packages. John Pace found the largest prime number known to humankind. And that number goes on to more than 23 million digits.”
The Washington Post: NASA: Legendary astronaut, moonwalker John Young has died.
“Young was the only spaceman to span NASA’s Gemini, Apollo and shuttle programs, and became the first person to rocket away from Earth six times. Counting his takeoff from the moon in 1972 as commander of Apollo 16, his blastoff tally stood at seven, for decades a world record.
He flew twice during the two-man Gemini missions of the mid-1960s, twice to the moon during NASA’s Apollo program, and twice more aboard the new space shuttle Columbia in the early 1980s.
His NASA career lasted 42 years, longer than any other astronaut’s, and he was revered among his peers for his dogged dedication to keeping crews safe — and his outspokenness in challenging the space agency’s status quo.”

Deutsche Welle: Plastikpiraten: Tausende Schüler erforschen Müll an deutschen Flüssen. “Über 5500 Jugendliche haben Müll in Flüssen gesammelt und gezählt – und ihre Daten mit Wissenschaftlern ausgewertet. Die Ergebnisse sind erschreckend, sagt Lehrerin und Wissenschaftlerin Katrin Kruse.”
“Uns wird immer mehr klar, dass auch in Deutschland jede Menge Müll in die Meere gelangt. Für die Schüler sind es aber doch noch neue Kenntnisse. Sie denken, dass das bei uns in Deutschland kein Problem sei. Hier werden Straßen, Ufer und Strände regelmäßig gereinigt. Doch die Untersuchungsergebnisse haben ein anderes Bild gezeichnet. Für die Schüler ist es dann doch sehr erschreckend, wenn man mal genau hin guckt, was eigentlich so am Flussufer rum liegt. Auch dass so viel Plastik unter dem Müll war, ist für die Schüler einigermaßen überraschend gewesen. Ich glaube, dass die Untersuchung für die beteiligten Schüler sehr, sehr nachhaltig ist.”
