Tag der Deutschen Einheit

Deutsche Welle: Merkel: “Opfer der SED-Diktatur nicht vergessen”. “Bundeskanzlerin Merkel hat beim Festakt zum Tag der Deutschen Einheit an die Diktatur-Opfer in der früheren DDR erinnert. Bundesratspräsident Günther würdigte die Wende als historische Lebensleistung der Ostdeutschen.”

“Bei der Einheitsfeier in Kiel sagte Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel mit Blick auf die Opfer des SED-Regimes: “Sie sollten wir nie vergessen, auch an einem Tag der Freude wie heute nicht.” Knapp 30 Jahre nach dem Mauerfall bezeichnete sie die Geschehnisse in der DDR im November 1989 als “Revolution im Geist der Freiheit”.

Die friedliche Revolution sei gelungen, weil sich die Menschen “die Mündigkeit nicht mehr länger vorenthalten lassen wollten”, betonte die Kanzlerin. Seit der Wiedervereinigung sei viel erreicht worden. Dennoch verbänden viele Ostdeutsche den Prozess heute nicht nur mit positiven Erfahrungen. Sie verwies auf die Brüche, die viele erlebt hätten, “als auf die Last der Teilung die Wucht der Einigung folgte”. Dies müsse auch bei der Betrachtung im Westen berücksichtigt werden.

Die staatliche deutsche Einheit sei vollendet, die Einheit der Deutschen sei es nicht, sagte Merkel weiter. Daher bleibe die Einheit ein fortwährender Prozess und ständiger Auftrag.”

Kommentar: Deutsche Einheit – Die nächste Generation, bitte! “Ist die Deutsche Einheit nach bald 30 Jahren vollendet? Mitnichten, meint Kay-Alexander Scholz, denn es gibt auch ein schwieriges Erbe. Die Jugend ist gefordert, einen neuen Anlauf beim Zusammenwachsen zu nehmen.”

BBC News: Chanel Miller: Stanford sexual assault survivor tells her story. “What do we know about Emily Doe? We know she was sexually assaulted by Brock Turner outside a frat party at Stanford University, California, one night in January 2015. She was found unconscious and partly-clothed, near a dumpster.”

“He would get a six-month term, for sexually assaulting an intoxicated victim, sexually assaulting an unconscious victim and attempting to rape her.

He would serve three months and be put on probation for three years, ending this month. Judge Aaron Persky, who was later removed from his post, cited Turner’s good character and the fact he had been drinking.

Much of the coverage at the time also focused on the fact Turner was a star swimmer.

“A former Stanford swimmer who sexually assaulted an unconscious woman was sentenced to six months in jail because a longer sentence would have “a severe impact on him,” according to a judge. At his sentencing Thursday, his victim read him a letter describing the “severe impact” the assault had on her.”
