MetaFilter: “You’d chase them under the tank, back and forth, like you were chasing a cat“ links to Deep Intellect –
Inside the mind of the octopus by Sy Montgomery.
There are some other interesting links in the comments, a mimic octopus alternately morphing into a flatfish, several sea snakes, and a lionfish and the oldie-but-goldie Where’s the octopus? (longer version than the one you may have seen years and years ago).
There’s more octopus goodness in this older thread, for example this anecdote about a pet octopus.

Westkanada: Der heilige Bär. “Für Westkanadas Indianer war der weiße Schwarzbär ein “Geisterbär”. Niemand durfte ihn jagen. Jetzt braucht das seltene Tier Schutz vor der Zerstörung seines Urwalds.” Von Bruce Barcott.
Digitale Grundschule: Guten Morgen, Herr Rechner! “Kinder können am Computer Jets steuern, die Bundesliga managen, Zivilisationen aufbauen. Könnten sie so nicht auch Grammatik und Rechnen lernen? Eine Reise zur digitalen Grundschule der Zukunft.” Von Jürgen von Rutenberg.
This MetaFilter thread on Rufous Hummingbirds has a link to some excellent hummingbird photos by Tony Markle. I wish hummingbirds were native to Germany, I would love to be able to watch them in my own garden…
The Boston Globe‘ Big Picture features photos from National Geographic‘s Photo Contest 2010 today.
National Geographic’s Photography Contest 2010:
“National Geographic is once again holding their annual Photo Contest, with the deadline for submissions coming up on November 30th. For the past eight weeks, they have been gathering and presenting galleries of submissions, encouraging readers to rate them as well. National Geographic was again kind enough to let me choose some of their entries from 2010 for display here on The Big Picture. Collected below are 47 images from the three categories of People, Places and Nature. Captions were written by the individual photographers.”
There are some really breathtaking shots there, plus one of a cuddly brown bear. I like the one of Ki Gompa as well.
