New York Times: This American Gamble. “Ira Glass’s ‘This American Life’ Leaves PRI”. By Cara Buckley, July 2, 2014.
“On July 1, “This American Life“ became independent, leaving its distributor of 17 years, Public Radio International, or PRI.
That change is partly technical. The program is no longer delivered to local stations through public radio’s satellite system, but instead over the Internet through the online platform PRX, the Public Radio Exchange.
But the big impact is financial. Gone are a distributor’s financial guarantees, which in the case of “This American Life,“ reached seven figures. Instead, Mr. Glass will now be responsible for the show’s marketing and distribution, as well as for finding corporate sponsors.”
Here‘s the link to the live show mentioned in the article: This American Life Live at BAM.
Youtube user Gigawipf creates music on a setup consisting of a dozen or so floppy disk drives and a hard drive. His version of Tainted Love was linked on The Huffington Post, but the James Bond theme is also worth listening to. Or how about Smoke on the Water?

New York Times Magazine: Billy Joel on Not Working and Not Giving Up Drinking

The last times I posted about Billy Joel (years ago) I mentioned that I attended one of the “Face 2 Face” tour concerts in 1998, but unfortunately Billy Joel was ill and unable to perform that night, so it was Elton John only. I’m still hoping to see both of them playing together, but it doesn’t sound to be very likely from the interview. Maybe I’ll at least get a chance to see Joel in concert on his own?
Today’s Rolling in the Higgs thread on MetaFilter sent me on a tour through Youtube and Vimeo…
Tim Blais aka A Capella Science (Tim explains about it here): Rolling in the Higgs (Adele Parody). Tim also is one half of Cabin Nine, and they cover songs like these: Europe: The Final Countdown (with guitar and cajon!), Amy Winehouse: Rehab.
AstroCappella is a project by The Chromatics: NASA | The Sun Song.
And of course this oldie but goldie: CERN Rap (also on Youtube, lyrics here).
