Smart car?!
Slow day. I didn’t do much, except for going jogging this afternoon with a friend. But… I saw this car in our street. I thought it might be interesting at least to my dear readers from outside Europe. It’s a Smart!

Looks pretty cool, huh? But does it look like a real car? 
The Smart is fairly new (available since October 2, 1998). The car is designed especially for people who drive in cities a lot. It’s small (two seats in the front only) so it needs very little parking space. I’ve seen Smarts using half a parking space perpendicular to the inteded parking direction. They also use little fuel and are not too expensive. I think a new Smart is about DM 18,000 or around US$ 9,000.
Most Smarts are also very colourful. They come in bright colous like pink, yellow or blue, and each smart has two colours on the outside. (This one is fairly plain, just light and dark grey, but then – it’s a convertible, a Smart Cabrio.) For the interior, you can choose red or orange with blue and other combinations. This one is red inside!

Harry Potter
Heute bin ich zufällig auf eine Leseprobe aus dem dritten Band von Harry Potter gestoßen. Wird Zeit, daß ich ihn mir kaufe!
Für Leute, die Harry Potter noch gar nicht kennen: Es gibt auch je eine Leseprobe aus dem ersten und zweiten Band. Ich finde allerdings, daß die deutsche Übersetzung nicht so gut ist wie das Original auf Englisch (auch wenn ich “nur” die US-Ausgabe kenne).

Übrigens, die Smarts waren ein ziemliches Marketingdebakel. Zielgruppe waren junge, hippe Stadtbewohner. Aber irgendwie hatten die sich weniger dafür interessiert. Dazu gibt es sicher Links, aber ich bin zu faul…
Tja, und wer fährt jetzt mit den Smarts ‘rum? Nun ja… Einer steht hier öfter in der Nachbarschaft, der hat ein Schild drin, Arzt im Noteinsatz oder so ähnlich. Ich schätze mal, der ist auch über 40…

die haben auch einen smart. ist nur krass, dass man die gesamte firmenphilosophie im netz findet. die hatten mal einen eigenen frontier-server. keine ahnung, wieso er wieder bei etp ist.

I wish I could read German, because I’m curious about what you wrote about Harry Potter. Here’s my best guess:
I think you are pointing people at the publisher’s web site so
that they can read the beginnings of the books (is the 3rd book newly
posted?). And I think you’re also saying that you like the English versions
better than the translations (even if they are “only” the US English
version!).

I think the third book came out late in 1999 in German, so it’s not that new any more. I know the English edition came out even earlier, but I have not gotten around to reading it yet, so the excerpt (the beginning of the book, really) made me very curious!
Unfortunately, I have several other new books on my shelf here that wait to be read, and I’m about to start the thesis I have to do in order to finish studying. So much to read, but so little time…

es gibt diese checkbox, um mails zu senden, wenn eine antwort kommt. ich war zufällig online. aber als trost, andre hat mich letztens auch beeindruckt: ich hatte ihm eine mail geschickt, auf de er vorher antwortete.
nun ja, man hat festgestellt, dass das licht auch schneller als das licht sein kann. wieso kann man dann nicht schneller antworten, als die frage gestellt wird.
Also, die Frage, ob Licht wirklich schneller als Licht sein kann, würde ich – als Physiker
– mal nicht so einfach mit Ja beantworten…

Hier ist die Geschichte mit dem Licht. Bizarr. Irgendwas ist schneller als es selbst oder so. nun ja, ich verstehe nix davon…
Ja, das habe ich schon (woanders) gelesen.
Wenn ich das richtig verstehe, ist es so: Das Licht kann man sich als einen kleinen Berg (Teilchenwelle) vorstellen, der durch das Medium wandert. Normalerweise verändert der Berg seine Form nicht, und das Licht hat maximal 300 000 000 m/s drauf. Bei dem beschriebenen Experiment ist es so, daß der Berg unterwegs die Form ändert, daß quasi ein Teil des Berges einen anderen Teil überholt. Und nur wenn man einen Teil des Berges betrachtet, kommt man zu dem Ergebnis, daß er “schneller als das Licht” ist – wohingegen der Berg als ganzes schön brav bei seiner Lichtgeschwindigkeit bleibt.
(Man sollte ausdrücklich dazusagen, daß das Experiment keinen Widerspruch zu Einsteins Relativitätstheorie darstellt, die sich nicht auf die Gruppengeschwindigkeit bezieht.)
