Happy New Year!
We’ve returned home after an extended stay with the family and the in-laws. I had a lot of school work waiting for me, but was sick for a couple of days. Now all that’s left from the Christmas holidays is three days – and a lot of work…
As usual, it was nice to see families again and to spend some time with old friends over the holidays. We rang in the new year with our usual game of RoboRally and a walk in the woods – in the snow! Snow in Northern Germany is a rare occurence, but we got some 10 to 15 cm between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

While I haven’t checked any of their excerpts out, I downloaded their Christmas special: the complete A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. It’s offered in five installments. Cinderella: Geometry on the computer
Cinderella “is a software for doing geometry on the computer, and it is designed to be both mathematically robust and easy to use. Read more about it on our website, check some interactive examples or download a demo to see yourself.” “You may download a copy of Cinderella for evaluation purposes here. This time-limited demo version has to be restarted after 15 minutes of use and it can save only a limited number of geometric elements. There are no other restrictions.”

Die Interaktive Geometriesoftware Cinderella “ist ein Programm für Geometrie auf dem Computer, entwickelt mit dem Anspruch, mathematisch robust und dennoch einfach zu benutzen zu sein.” Im Mathematikunterricht kann man das Programm als dynamische Geometriesoftware einsetzen, z. B. um zu zeigen, dass in jedem Dreieck sich die Winkelhalbierenden in einem Punkt schneiden. Aber Cinderella kann auch sehr viel anspruchsvollere Dinge, wie man im Adventskalender sehen kann.
“Hier können Sie eine kostenfreie Version von Cinderella 1.4 auf ihren Rechner laden. Nur die deutschsprachige Universitäts-Version 1.4, herausgegeben vom Springer-Verlag Heidelberg, ist frei, wenn Sie Cinderella in einer anderen Sprache starten, wird es nach 15 Minuten automatisch beendet.”
Natürlich hatte ich früher schon mehrfach zu dieser Software gelinkt, aber ich bin jetzt wieder darüber gestolpert, weil ich eine Facharbeit über hyperbolische Geometrie betreue. Und Cinderella beherrscht neben der “normalen” euklidischen Geometrie eben auch die elliptische und die hyperbolische Geometrie. So kann man sich viel besser in diese Geometrien hineindenken!
Kurze Erläuterung: Das Parallelenaxiom der euklidischen Geometrie besoagt, dass es zu jeder Geraden genau eine Parallele durch einen gegebenen Punkt gibt. In der elliptischen Geometrie gibt es gar keine Parallele, in der hyperbolischen Geometrie mehr als eine. Die Winkelsumme im Dreieck ist im Euklidischen 180°, in der elliptischen Geometrie (auf der Kugel) größer als 180°, in der hyperbolischen Geometrie kleiner als 180°.
