April 1 2000

April fool’s day makes everyone change his or her profession:

Zannah aka /usr/bin/girl:

I’ve decided to give up the internet and become a nun.

Alwin Hawkins:

I am leaving nursing and becoming a full time Manila developer, programmer, and writer. I’m going to earn a living from the Internet. Heck, even Dave Winer does it – how hard can it be?

Dave:

Ohhh. I’ve had it with the Web. Last week I warned you about this. I quit writing DaveNet, but apparently that wasn’t enough for some people. You know who you are! So just to show how my feelings have been hurt today is my last day doing Scripting News. I’m also thinking about pulling the plug on all the servers here. I’ve had it with PacBell! They suck too. You know who you are! Losers. You’ll miss me when I’m gone!

Okay, folks, I’m going to become an astronaut. I’ve wanted to be an astronaut since I was in third grade!

Mathematics and education

John Marden says:

Andrea’s essay on math is done. I tried to read it, but I guess I don’t remember my German as well as I thought. I’ll have to wait for the translation.

You won’t have to wait for a long time… I’m already working on it!

Oliver Breidenbach seems not to have any problems with my German…

But it seems my essay is not quite what he has expected. Oliver, I could have been bolder, but this it the last Schein I need so I didn’t want to risk it. I guess it’s bold enough for my professor, anyway.

I totally understand your motives on that. Still I think you wouldn´t have risked your Schein. Well, I´ll have to take my own chances. In the end I quit University because I couldn´t stand the attitude that they take towards themselves. They take themselves too seriously, but have so many weaknesses.

I only regret it because it is not so easy to find new friends anymore.

Congrats anyways. I think the essay is very thoughtful and professional. I hope you had fun doing it. Because in the end that is what really counts.

    Enjoy your life,

    Oliver.

    Let me comment on this.

First, I’d like to explain about that “risking my Schein“. I think I would have written most of what I wrote anyway, but I wanted to end with

Wie soll man die Ziele der Bildung erreichen, wenn nicht mit Mathematik?

How can you achieve the goals of education without Mathematics?

but I guess that would have been too bold because it sounds like anybody who is not a genius in math cannot call himself educated, and that’s wrong. Also, I thought my professor, who studied history and German or some such, would think I’m trying to tell him he is not educated.

I hope you had fun doing it. Because in the end that is what really counts.

Yes, indeed! I had a lot of fun, mostly while reading a lot of books. (The writing is not so much fun.) And what counts also, I have learned a lot. This was the first time I really thought about this, and I think everyone who wants to become a teacher should think about why his/her subjects are so damn important.

    Andrea
