‘Darkness Is My Canvas, Light Is My Brush’

Colossal: In-Camera Light Paintings by Hannu Huhtamo Sprout in the Darkness Like Alien Blooms.

“Utilizing a variety of light tools, Finland-based artist Hannu Huhtamo works in the dark to create these delightfully unusual light paintings. Appearing like alien flowers blooming in forests and abandoned buildings, each piece is created in-camera without the aid of Photoshop.”

Here’s a short video on how he produces his pictures: ‘Darkness Is My Canvas, Light Is My Brush’ (YouTube, 2:21min).

… but not the ‘Painted Ladies’

Hoodline: Meet Dr. Color: How Bob Buckter Repainted San Francisco. His website is DrColor.com.

One vista he hasn’t directly touched is the famed “postcard row” of painted ladies on Alamo Square. He’s done other historic work on the park, but not on that uniquely iconic stretch of Steiner St. They are “a bit understated for my taste,” he says.”

Quilt Envy

If I had unlimited time (and budget for buying fabric and notions), I would love to sew a lot more. One of my favorite quilters that keeps a weblog is Ashley of Film in the Fridge fame. Take a look at these gorgeous quilts:

Modern Quilts

Tara Faughnan (website, weblog) makes beautiful modern quilts. I like the colors and the geometric patterns she chooses and wouldn’t mind having one to hang on our living-room wall. Or maybe I should steal one of her ideas, adapt to our color palette, and get on with the sewing myself!

See How We Sew: Tara Faughnan – Embrace your creative mess! and Part 2 – Tara Faughnan shares her quilts.

Michael Miller Fabrics offers a printed cotton fabric with the Fireworks design by her, and you can download the instructions (PDF) for her Prism Quilt for free. Jolene of Blue Elephant Stitches made this version using subtle prints next to solids.
