shadowmarch: Reading

This is a must-read for all Tad Williams fans, and a great opportunity for those who don’t know him yet: Shadowmarch. This is an epic fantasy novel, probably not unlike Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. Shadowmarch is only available online, and three episodes have been released so far.

Although there seem to pe plans to restrict at least parts of Shadowmarch to those who are willing to pay for a subscription, everything is free for now.

Besides the story itself, there are galleries with drawings of the characters, some other goodies and a message board, on which I read that a German radio station is planning to produce a radio series based on Otherland. It’s going to be 24 x 55 minutes long – twice as long as the German Lord of the Rings series. Wow!

Busy busy

Lots of work to do… the exams are getting closer. I don’t know the exact dates yet, but the written exams are in August and the first half of September. And I really wish I had not chosen algebra for the math exam. Galois theory, anyone?

The three exams in physics (atomic physics, nuclear and particle physics, physics didactic) don’t scare me as much, and I refuse to worry much about pedagogics, for which I have read about a dozen books, and that’s about all I can do. We’ll se how it goes.

Whoops – I meant to post this last night, but I fell asleep while reading about 9 pm, and I didn’t really wake up until eight this morning! It seems the hot weather can be exhausting, but I still like it. We’ve been enjoying sunshine and temperatures in the thirtees (around 90°F for those of you who think in Farenheid) for days now! I love summer, and I’d love this one even more if I didn’t have to prepare for those exams…

San Francisco from 15,000 feet. Beautiful photo, Jeff!

Kottenforst: Bike tour

André and I went to the Kottenforst, a nearby forest, by bike today. Here are some photos.

The Eden Project

Remember that André and I visited the Eden Project in Cornwall? I just found How the Eden Project works on How Stuff Works. Quite an interesting read.

Cooking

I found some recipes for Barb and Roland on Jürgen’s Homepage:

  • German Recipes
  • Bavarian Recipes
  • I haven’t tried any of them, but they sure sound good.

And by the way, Jürgen seems to be a huge fan of asian food as well.

Get well soon, Scott! I hope you get rid of that bronchitis soon!

I love these flame lilies, Sheila. Great photo!

Damage report. Boy, what a day! I hope not every day is like this…

Duncan and Al mention/comment on Seth Bokelman’s iBook review, which is an interesting read because he describes his experience as a PC user who bought a Mac for the first time.

By the way, I encountered the same difficulties when installing more RAM. In fact, I didn’t get it in because I feared I might break it. Both the inside of the laptop and the RAM seem fragile, but obviously they’re not. Finally I asked André to install it. I don’t have an Airport card, though. Of course it would be cool to have one, but I don’t really need it.

Bibliomania. The name says it all: Bibliomania has “free online literature with more than 2000 classic texts, literature book notes, author biographies, book summaries and reference books, classic fiction, drama, poetry, short stories, contemporary articles and interviews, study guides to the most read books and help for teachers, reference books, dictionaries, quotations”, et cetera, et cetera.

    The Media Borg

Must-read article on Salon: Assimilating the Web. “Like ‘Star Trek’s’ all-powerful Borg, AOL and Microsoft are determined to crush the spirit of online independence. Is resistance futile? First in a series on the consolidation of power and ownership in the media landscape.”

    Schule

    Krokodil: Wild animals in Germany

Salon: Police search Rhine for crocodile. Yesterday, I heard on the radio that the crocodile was last seen near Eltville, about 100 km upstream from Bonn. Reptiles don’t produce their own body heat, so they are dependent on the weather. An expert said that the crocodile will likely freeze to death in the cool water of the Rhine if it is not found and rescued soon. It is probably lying on the shore as much as possible to catch some sun and stay warm. Poor thing!

The photo shows a crocodile lying on the shore of the Samburu River in Kenya. The open mouth helps it to cool off.
