Has anyone seen Space Cowboys? I just read a review in Die Zeit (German weekly newspaper), which was very positive. I think I want to see the film. Can you recommend it?
Oh, and while we’re talking about films: What about Shang-High Noon? Should André and I watch it?
I wonder why this film is called ‘Shanghai Noon’ in the US, but ‘Shang-High Noon’ in Germany?

This is a useful site: Foreign languages for travelers. They have 74 languages, and you can learn the basic vocabulary you might need if you travel to foreign countries. And it has real audio files of the words/phrases so you know how to pronounce them.

Who would have guessed?!
Yesterday, Craig apologized to his international readers for posting so much election stuff. That’s fine with me! I think the outcome of the election is important for other countries as well as for the US themselves. They’re not some barely-known, unimportant little foreign country, after all.

Diesmal sogar auf deutsch! Auf Schreibsalon.de gibt es einen Bericht über Tad Williams Lesung in Köln. Interessant finde ich, daß er dort scheinbar ganz andere Stories zum besten gegeben haben als hier in Bonn. Ich kann mich aber dem Schreiber anschließen: Eine ‘Lesung’ mit Tad Williams ist ein Erlebnis!

What really embarrasses me about our US elections is the absolutely ridiculous way in which we conduct them. So much wasted money and energy and for so little in the way of results. I can’t cite a source, but I heard last night on some tv show or other that the Democratic and Republican parties have spent nearly 500 million dollars on this years political races, not including the presidential race! When one includes the money spent by Bush and Gore, this must mean over 1 billions dollars spent in all. And we might end up with George W. Bush as president.
Excuse me, I think I’m going to be sick.
By-the-way, as Stevie Ray Vaughn said so well in song, It’s Flooding Down in Texas, and The Sky Is Crying.
It’s really sad to see all the money go into this – one billion dollars! What could you do with all that money?
In Germany, the parties get some money from the country/government for advertising, depending on how many votes they got in the last election, but it’s not that much. If they take money from companies, they have to write it down in their I-don’t-know-the-English-word, some paper where they say how much money the party got from where and what they use it for. (And if they don’t, they get in trouble, like the CDU and the former chancellor Kohl just did.)
I think this is a good idea to prevent big campaigns like those you have in the US.

They spend so much money and yet reach only very few people. I remember that I read somewhere (maybe it was in the Coke discussion or over at Garret’s) that of the 50% of Americans that vote, most vote for the same party every time anyway and that basically all the money is used to try to convince those few people who don’t. I wonder how many $$ each of these votes cost…

Es gibt übrigens in der telepolis eine begeisterte Kritik und auch Spiegel Online berichtet positiv. Die Kritik in der Berliner Zeitung war allerdings eher verhalten (hatte an dem Tag kaum Zeit, daher keinen Link…)
Aber dafür gibt es ja den Rollberg: Der hat hier alle Links zu Filmkritiken, die Nina und ich dort gesammelt haben.
PS: Deine neue Schriftgröße finde ich optimal (auf dem Mac). Hast Du schon Resonanz von Windows-Benutzern? Und was ist das für eine Schrift und Schriftgröße? Deine Seite ist nämlich jetzt toll lesbar und vielleicht kann ich dann ja auch den Schockwellenreiter verbessern…

Klar hat das so lange Zeit! Wir gehen tendenziell immer montags oder dienstags oder mittwochs, weil da im Kinopolis Bad Godesberg Kinotag ist – und es gibt zusätzlich noch Studentenrabatt!

Hach, und ich dachte schon, es hat überhaupt niemand bemerkt! Kleine Änderung, große Wirkung – auf dem Mac. Ich habe eine Freundin nach ihrer Meinung gefragt, und sie hat überhaupt keine Unterschiede bemerkt. Sie benutzt Windows – und hatte offensichtlich ihren Browser auch noch so eingestellt, daß die Änderungen nicht aufgefallen sind. (Ich hatte meinen Browser auch so eingestellt, daß ich die Seiten so gesehen habe, wie sie jetzt hoffentlich jeder sehen sollte. Hab’ mir halt irgendwann überlegbt, daß doch vielleicht alle Leser in den Genuß kommen sollten…)
Ach so, Resonanz: Mit dem IE unter Windows sieht’s gut aus (selbst auf Andrés Dose getestet), von Netscape weiß ich es nicht, das hat André nicht installiert. Aber Beschwerden hab’ ich auch noch keine bekommen!
