Exam

I survived my first oral exam this morning. It went quite well, I think, but the profs thought otherwise and gave me a poorer grade than I deserved, at least in my opinion. But now it’s over, so whatever. At least I won’t have to deal with pedagogy any more. For the next five weeks I’m gonna bury myself in math and physics books.

This afternoon I went to see a wonderful exhibition of paintings and sketches that August Macke (deutsche Site) did during the time he lived in Bonn. He’s one of my favourite painters, and this is the best of the paintings from Bonn, in my opinion. It shows the artist’s wife and son in their garden. I took a photo of the painting (see above), and it turned out well although I had no tripod.

There were also quite a few impressive sketches. I like this one from the website of the August Macke Haus (site in German).

Tonight I’m going to watch Chocolat at the movies, and I guess by the time I come home I’ll be more than ready for bed. I’m always amazed at how much an exam can exhaust you, even if it is only one hour long… Too bad I can’t take a few days off. Unfortunately, there’s too much stuff I have to learn for the two remaining exams.

Forty-two

A very happy birthday to you, Garret!

Have a wonderful day!

Words

I sure get interesting feedback on this weblog… Today I got email from someone who participates in AWAD (a word a day) talk at Wordsmith. There was a discussion about how to call a “one month anniversary” since anniversary comes from the Latin word annum for year. Someone suggested the term “mensiversary” because mensis is Latin for month. Someone did a web search for the term, found a page of my site and posted it to the board (scroll 1/3 down).

Cheap RAM

Since Scott mentioned it today and others talked about it as well: I bought 256 MB of RAM for my iBook last week – for DM 99 (currently US$ 46).

When I bought the computer this spring, 256 MB still cost DM 260. The 384 MB the computer now has should be enough for the lifespan of this computer.

And now it’s time for bed. My first oral exam is on Wednesday.

No mail today

It seems we didn’t get any mail today because there was an anthrax (deutsch: Milzbrand) scare. When the mail was sorted yesterday, an envelope ripped and white powder fell out. The police was called, the delivery of mail stopped, and the powder was examined. It turned out it was harmless, but it was too late for the mail to go out in time today.

    Nobel Prizes

This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics (deutsch) is awarded to Eric Cornell, Wolfgang Ketterle and Carl Wiemann for the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation.

I attended a lecture Ketterle gave about Bose-Einstein condensation and atomic lasers in the physics colloquium at the University of Hanover on June 10, 1997.
