The Exploratorium in San Francisco has a great exhibition at the moment (October 6, 2001 – May 5, 2002): Mathematica. See also this article. Too bad San Francisco is so far away from Germany…

Aber hier in Bonn gibt’s auch bald eine schöne Matheausstellung: Mathematik zum Anfassen. Albrecht Beutelspacher, der Initiator, dürfte zumindest Mathestudenten ein Begriff sein. (Buch “Das ist o. B. d. A trivial” und andere). Die Ausstellung ist überall in Deutschland unterwegs; hier die geplanten Orte bis Mitte 2002.

Tolkien

The New York Times maintains an archive of articles about J. R. R. Tolkien and his works. The original review of The Hobbit from 1938 is interesting to read: A Delightfully Imaginative Journey. (No registration required for these links.)

I’m looking very forward to seeing the movie. Let’s hope it shows up on this list of films our local cinema shows in the original version. (The Harry Potter movie is on that list as well, which makes me happy. I suppose it would be strange to have to see the movies in German after reading the books in the original English version.)

Das Internet ist ein Dorf

Eben bekam ich eine Email von jemandem, der zufällig auf meinem Weblog gelandet war. Unterschrieben war sie nur mit rushme, und neugierig, wie ich bin, habe ich einen whois-lookup gemacht, weil mir das so gar nichts sagte. Und wen finde ich da? Einen ehemaligen Mitschüler, von dem ich seit dem Abi vor über sieben Jahren nichts mehr gehört habe! Er hat auch gerade ein Weblog angefangen.

Ich gebe zu, auf dem Foto habe ich ihn nicht erkannt. Aber das beste: er mich hier auch nicht! Wenn ich nicht die Domain nachgeschaut hätte, hätten wir wahrscheinlich nicht mal gemerkt, daß wir uns kennen.

Quick update

Whew, I survived. My oral exam in mathematics was this morning. And I passed. Afterwards, the professors both told me they knew I could have done better, but I was pretty nervous at the beginning of the exam, and the exam was almost halfway over before I could think straight again. But at least I survived.

This afternoon I will be lazy and do lots of stuff that is not related to math and physics in any way. And tomorrow, it’s back to learning. Two weeks to go until the last exam in physics.

Recording audio streams on a Mac

Omerta (and RavenX) put together some instructions on How to record data streams from the web on a Mac. Now I can try to record The Lord of the Rings which is being broadcast by a German radio stations in 30 episodes of 30 minutes each, starting tonight.

Math

I learnt a lot of math in the last couple of days. Sometimes it felt like I learnt more in the past weeks than in years before, but I think it’s that all the studying finally pays off because I’m now able to connect different aspects and areas of math to each other. The only thing that does not connect well with anything is stochastics, my least favourite. Differential equations are not much better, but I understand more about them. Function theory and geometry, however, are just fine, so I’m beginning to believe there’s a chance I will actually pass this exam on Tuesday. Ugh. Back to a little more work, then bed. More stochastics tomorrow.

Der Herr der Ringe

Rechtzeitig, bevor der Film in den Kinos anläuft, sendet SWR2 ab morgen das Hörspiel zum Herrn der Ringe, das 1991 vom Südwestrundfunk und WDR produziert wurde. Es soll eine gute Version sein, insgesamt 30 Folgen à 30 Minuten. Das ganze gibt’s auch auf CD, aber die Ausgabe kostet ca. 100 DM.

Die Sendetermine: SWR2: ab morgen immer von 23:05 bis 0:00 Uhr, Das Ding: ab übermorgen täglich von 22 bis 23 Uhr. Weitere Infos bei SWR3.

Jetzt könnte ich mich also jeden Abend hinsetzen und die Folgen aufzeichnen – wenn mir nicht die technischen Mittel fehlen würden! Wir haben keinen Kassettenrecorder und auch kein Programm, mit dem man den Webstream aufzeichnen kann. Hat nicht jemand Lust, das für mich aufzunehmen?

Alternativ wäre ich auch für einen Tip dankbar, wie ich den Webstream mit dem Mac aufnehmen (leider habe ich keine Informationen darüber gefunden, in welchem Format der Stream gesendet wird; mp3 wäre mir natürlich am liebsten) kann. Mac-Man, kennst Du Dich da aus?

Weil ich heute den ganzen Tag in der Uni gelernt habe, habe ich von den möglichen Anthrax-Fällen in Deutschland erst heute abend gehört – um weniger als eine halbe Stunde später zu erfahren, daß es offenbar falscher Alarm war.
