Oops! Dave Winer just told me that members of my site were not able to post messages because I messed up the setup somehow. But now every member should be able to post. My apologies!

I went to the library today and got about 5 kg (10 pounds) of books concerning mathematics, philosophy and the like. Guess what I’ll be doing this weekend!

Today I finally put some questions (and answers) on my FAQ page!

Hey, I was on Manila-Newbies!

Nanu?! Manila-Newbies hatte einen Link zu meiner Seite!

Yes, indeed it seems to work.

Here are some additional thoughts on mathematics:

Some people believe that mathematics and religion are competing philosophies. They hold that there should be things left undescribed and mysterical like God, the soul, the spiritual. They also believe that there are things that can not be expressed “scientifically”. As if Science would destroy the beauty and wonder connected to some things.

On the other hand these people use logic and mathematical terms like “exists” to talk about those things. I do not think that spirituality, religion and science are mutually exclusive. They simply are part of life. The fact that there are things one can not imagine is also part of life, so it is little wonder that a scientist will have to accept that there will always be things they can not understand.

I am very curious about what you will find out with your studies!

    Cheers,

    Oliver.

I guess I’ll have to put tho whole thing on my homepage, then. But it will take some time (it’s due on march 31st).

    I thought that was imparative… ;-)

Use the force! Why not write it online anyways? We could give you input while you go. Just post everything.

Didn´t you want to become famous?

    Cheers,

    Oliver.

    Um, well…

I’ll think about it. I guess it would be useful to have some feedback, but I’m not sure yet I want feedback all the time.

Didn´t you want to become famous?

I’m not so sure. When I took this almost-quote from David Theige, I didn’t really believe I might become famous.

While writing about my essay here, I didn’t think about the consequences much; I just thought that somebody might give me an inspiration… I got inspirations allright, so I guess now it’s my turn to give the results of the inspiration back.

Da habe ich mir wohl mein eigenes Grab geschaufelt…

another addition, probably my most serious one.

i used to have a math professor who started his first lecture with the words: “Mathematics is the queen of sciences”. (he was professor in geometry, he continued with “geometry is the mother of mathematics”)

it’s a pity that you, as being a student of math etc., have not met such a charismatic person. what he was trying to say with this statement is that every science is influenced by math. the word “scientific” is actually used a synonym for “mathemical”. for example, scientific methods mean mathematically justified methods. without maths there is no science.

that’s it, basically. if we want the next generations to get into research and to develop new technologies, we (or you ;-) have to teach them mathematics (and not chess or spelling ;-).

    now it’s your turn.
