Fun with Paper

The Toymaker offers paper toys you can make yourself. Just print them out (they all have that beautiful classical and slightly antique look) and glue them together.

Art

I discovered the artist Alexander Calder a couple of days ago. Here is a page with a lot of links about him. Read more about him and his art at the SFMOMA. The site also offers information on his mobiles and wire sculptures. I like the wire sculptures at the top of this page (a few more are here) and especially the fish mobiles: fish (bigger photo here), finny fish (including detail images), brazilian fish. You can take a virtual tour (Apple Quicktime VR required) of an exhibition of his art at the National Gallery of Art. There also is an interesting article at the Mechanical Engineering Magazine: The Engineer behind Calder’s Art.

Mathematician

How much energy are you using?

I calculated my global footprint again. Since the first calculation three and a half years ago (see also here) I have bought a car, and I’ve been driving almost 500 km a week for the past three months because the distance between home and my school is about 85 km. I thought that this would increase my footprint by a lot, but it seems that driving a car is only a minor aspect of the energy you’re using.

My results this tiem: food 1.3 global hectares, mobility 0.6, shelter 1.1, goods/services 1.4 – total footprint 4.4 global hectares. The average ecological footprint in Germany is 4.7, and statistically, there are 1.8 hectares for every man on earth. I find it hard to believe that I’m still below the average for Germany, but on the other hand we would need 2.4 planets if everybody lived like I do.

Geographie

Webgis-Schule ist “ein Angebot für Schulen zum Einstieg in Geographische Informationssysteme (GIS)”. Es gibt dort Informationen zum Klima überall auf der Welt, und man kann die Datenbank nach Klimastationen mit bestimmten Merkmalen durchsuchen. Alle Funktionen habe ich selbst noch nicht ausprobiert, also empfehle ich, einfach mal ein bisschen herumzuprobieren. Es macht Spaß!

Garten

Der wunderschöne private Japanischen Garten von Günter Heymans ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert – entweder real am Niederrhein oder wenigstens virtuell per gut gestalteter Website mit vielen schönen Fotos.
