I finished the second of two baby blanket today, for the twins of a friend that were born in December. M is the boy, L the girl. How did you guess?

Patchwork & Quilt Inspiration
I follow a lot of quilting and patchwork blogs via RSS. Moda Bake Shop has a lot of free tutorials, working mostly with pre-cuts. Today they posted a list of the 15 most popular posts in 2015. My farourites from the list are the Gooseberry Star Patch Quilt (rated easy) by Peta Peace and the Scrappy Irish Chain Quilt (medium) by Karin Vail. The instructions call for the use of layer cakes or jelly rolls (which you can look up at weights and measures), but you can use yardage as well and do the cutting yourself.
Patchwork with a 3D Element
Today’s Friday Tutorial at the Cutting Table (Missouri Quilt Star Company) is The One Seam Flying Geese Quilt. Here’s the video. I like that the Flying Geese are three-dimensional, so to speak, which would certainly add some interest to a wall hanging.
This reminded me of this Textured Quilt Sampler from Sewn Up – Teresa Down Under which combines 25 different sewn textures like pintucks, pleats, gathers, shirring, smocking etc. This was posted three years ago, but today I finally took a closer look at Teresa’s weblog and discovered 41 fabric manipulation tutorials, which also includes a textured four-patch quilt tutorial.
I might have to make a wall hanging like this for our open-plan living-dining-kitchen area, which has a slight echo because of the high ceilings and wood/tile floors.
Quick Baby Quilt
A colleague had a baby a few weeks ago. I’m going to visit her and her daughter for the first time tomorrow and made a quick simple baby quilt as a present.
My inspiration was this quilt from Katie did (and others she made before: one; two, three) that I’ve wanted to try since seeing it on her website a few years ago.
The front is Kona cotton in spearmint:
The back is Kona cotton in white:
I used a striped fabric from my stash for the binding and quilted the layers with six or seven different thread colors that match the stripes.
I attached a label with the baby’s name and date of birth (which I scrambled on these photos for privacy reasons). Hope she likes it!
