Reisen

Wenn’s mit dem Bahnfahren nicht so klappt (siehe unten), bleiben einem immer noch Schusters Rappen. Wanderbares Deutschland ist eine “Plattform für Informationen rund um das Wandern in Deutschland” und man findet dort unter vielem anderem Übersichtskarten, Etappeninformationen und Höhenprofile.

Snow?

It’s funny how this photo seems almost surreal to me just because I’ve seen the same garden in August, when the temperature was about 40°C. In winter autumn, you can tell that Santa Fe is 2500 m above sea level.

Update: Ah, now that‘s better! And at least it doesn’t look cold.

Die Bahn

Wie einige andere Leute auch bin ich nicht gerade erfreut, daß die Bahn ein neues Tarif- und Rabattsystem einführt. Die Argumente, welche gegen das neue System sprechen, sind hier gut ausgeführt: Plan-Spar-Fahren von Albrecht Müller: “Das neue Preissystem wird viel Ärger bringen – das ist das Letzte, was die Bahn gebrauchen kann.” (Eine kleine Korrektur zum Artikel findet man in diesem Leserbrief.)

Der einzige Vorteil des neuen Systems, der mir spontan einfällt, ist der Rabatt für die zweite Person auch mit Bahncard. Davon können André und ich profitieren – wenn wir denn mal gemeinsam mit der Bahn unterwegs sind. Oft klappt das aber sowieso nicht.

Und man liest jetzt überall, daß Bahncards für Familien mit fünf Kindern nur noch € 5 pro Nase kosten, wenn ein Elternteil eine Bahncard zum regulären Preis erwirbt. Ich gehe mal davon aus, daß das auch für Ehe- und Lebensabschnittspartner gilt.

Williams College Museum of Art: Prelude to a nightmare – art, politics, and Hitler’s early years in Vienna 1906 – 1913. The exhibition of paintings and drawings by Hitler is very controversial. I didn’t even know that artwork by him (some of which is shown on the web pages) still exists.

Hostage Drama in Moscow

I followed the events on TV – scary. Go to Papa Scott for info and links. He is one of apparently very few webloggers who cover the story.

It’s very sad and scary to hear that over a hundred people died, but I don’t even want to imagine what could have happened if the terrorists had blown up the theater.

Back Home

After a week with my parents, André and I came back yesterday. Unfortunately, a storm managed to delay our train for about five hours. The Intercity was slower than usual all the time, and when we reached Cologne we heard that the storm had damaged both tracks between Cologne and Bonn, so there was nothing to do but wait. Some people tried to ride the underground/Straßenbahn instead (two lines connect Bonn and Cologne), but they were damaged as well. Finally, after several hours of waiting, they allowed one train to proceed. We arrived in Bonn in time to catch the last train to our part of town and arrived at home around 11:30 pm instead of 6:30 pm. Fortunately, our house is still standing, and we made it back in one piece.

Ralf, wenn die Bahn uns nicht doch noch nach Hause gebracht hätte, hätten wir uns wohl bei Dir über Nacht einquartiert. Ich hoffe, bei Dir steht das Haus auch noch und Du hast den Orkan gut überstanden.
