School’s out

I snatched the title from Scott. School’s out – for now. I’m not going to mention that I’m probably going to spend the rest of my working life in school…

By the way, all those links made my site number 37 in the Daypop Top 40 Links today. I didn’t know the list existed, but it showed up in my referrers.

It feels great to waste some time without feeling guilty. Today I did profane things like going shopping and cooking – things I haven’t done for weeks, thanks to André. He was very supportive throughout the past year, and now it’s my turn to pay him back!

However, I still feel exhausted. It’s similar to that tiredness you feel the day before you get down with a cold or flu, but I don’t think I’m going to be ill because I felt the same way after the other exams. Strange how mental work can make your body tired. I’ll be better tomorrow, and now I’m going to bed.

Clarification: Yes, this means I’ve passed my last exam. It went much, much better than math, so I’m happy now.

The Exploratorium in San Francisco has a great exhibition at the moment (October 6, 2001 – May 5, 2002): Mathematica. See also this article. Too bad San Francisco is so far away from Germany…

Aber hier in Bonn gibt’s auch bald eine schöne Matheausstellung: Mathematik zum Anfassen. Albrecht Beutelspacher, der Initiator, dürfte zumindest Mathestudenten ein Begriff sein. (Buch “Das ist o. B. d. A trivial” und andere). Die Ausstellung ist überall in Deutschland unterwegs; hier die geplanten Orte bis Mitte 2002.

Tolkien

The New York Times maintains an archive of articles about J. R. R. Tolkien and his works. The original review of The Hobbit from 1938 is interesting to read: A Delightfully Imaginative Journey. (No registration required for these links.)

I’m looking very forward to seeing the movie. Let’s hope it shows up on this list of films our local cinema shows in the original version. (The Harry Potter movie is on that list as well, which makes me happy. I suppose it would be strange to have to see the movies in German after reading the books in the original English version.)

Das Internet ist ein Dorf

Eben bekam ich eine Email von jemandem, der zufällig auf meinem Weblog gelandet war. Unterschrieben war sie nur mit rushme, und neugierig, wie ich bin, habe ich einen whois-lookup gemacht, weil mir das so gar nichts sagte. Und wen finde ich da? Einen ehemaligen Mitschüler, von dem ich seit dem Abi vor über sieben Jahren nichts mehr gehört habe! Er hat auch gerade ein Weblog angefangen.

Ich gebe zu, auf dem Foto habe ich ihn nicht erkannt. Aber das beste: er mich hier auch nicht! Wenn ich nicht die Domain nachgeschaut hätte, hätten wir wahrscheinlich nicht mal gemerkt, daß wir uns kennen.
