Today André and I met Dave here in Bonn. We went for a little walk, had a beer at a Biergarten next to the Rhine and ate dinner at a Turkish restaurant. Unfortunately, I didn’t think of taking a photo of the three of us, so all I can offer is a photo of a grim-looking Beethoven with a pigeon on his head.

By the way, it’s Dave’s birthday today, so Herzlichen Glückwunsch und alles Gute zum Geburtstag, Dave! (Translation: Congratulations and all the best!) Maybe we’ll see you again in the summer?!

I’d also like to mention that I don’t generally feel as old as this posting may imply. We talked about weblogs and whether they can be used in education, and I said that the concept of a weblog is still quite novel in Germany; compared to most people, my weblog has been around for a long time (more than four years), so I said I sometimes feel like the grandmother of Germany weblogging. (I know that some Germans have been writing on the web for much longer than that, but they write journals, not weblogs.)

Letterboxing

I found a reference to letterboxing on some weblog (don’t remember where) and looked for some info on this at Google. I found Letterboxing.org and Silent Doug’s Letterboxing Site with a lot of information and background. It really sounds like a fun and sometimes challenging hobby. It’s somewhat similar to Geocaching. Letterboxing started at the Dartmoor in England and is popular in the USA as well. It hasn’t yet become widespread elsewhere in Europe, but there are a few letterboxes in Germany which you can find at Letterboxing Germany (site in English).

Spiegel online: Schriftstellerin Monica Ali: Beiläufig zerschellen Träume. “Geboren ist sie in Bangladesch, aufgewachsen in Südlondon. Nachdem sie Mutter geworden war, begann die Britin Monica Ali zu schreiben – eigentlich nur für sich selbst. Trotzdem gelang ihr aus dem Stand ein Bestseller. “Brick Lane” erzählt feinfühlig vom Einwandererleben in Londons East End.” Von Ulf Lippitz.

Hört sich nach einem interessanten Buch an, also auf meinen Wunschzettel damit!

Diese Woche in der Zeit

Bildung: Jongleure des Wissens. “Die Physikanten aus Dortmund machen auf der Bühne Physik zur Varieténummer.” Von Tobias Beck.

Kunst: Archivar der Eiszeit. “In mehr als fünfzig Höhlen fotogra?erte Heinrich Wendel steinzeitliche Kunst. Nun sind die Bilder erstmals zu sehen.” (Artikel mit einigen schönen Fotografien)

Vermöbelt: Das große Stühlerücken. “Gartenmöbel aus Urwaldholz verschandeln die Umwelt – vor allem optisch.” Von Matthias Stolz.

Eselsbrücken: Was vom Abi übrig bleibt… “Die Abiturprüfungen haben begonnen. Die Schüler müssen zeigen, was nach 12 oder 13 Schuljahren hängen geblieben ist. Eine späte Reifeprüfung unter ZEIT-Redakteuren beweist, dass man auch nach Jahrzehnten vor allem eines nicht vergisst: Die Eselsbrücken.”

Wie ich gerade sehe, wurde in der Online-Version des Artikels schon ein Fehler berichtigt; die Papierversion behauptete nämlich, das Kugelvolumen sei 3/4 π r³ statt, wie es richtig heißen muss, 4/3 π r³.
