Amsterdam – Sunday, May 27, 2001

On Sunday, it rained a little when we left the hotel after breakfast, so we decided to go to the Amsterdams Historisch Museum (Historical Museum). It is housed in the former civil orphanage. Here’s the entrance:

Afterwards, when the weather had cleared up a bit, we went to the Begijnhof (link to a page in Dutch), a secluded court in which nuns used to live. Here’s a panorama.

25begijnhofpanorama:

The white house in the middle of the upper left photo is probably one of the narrowest houses in Amsterdam. It’s only 145 cm (less than 5 ft) wide.

In the afternoon, we met Frauke, Scott and Christopher for a cup of coffee or tea before they started their journey home around four. We had another three hours until our train left, so we explored the city some more and had dinner at a Thai restaurant.

De Waag (the scales) on the Nieuwmarkt, Amsterdam’s oldest building, was built in 1488.
