We got up pretty late after our nightly walk through Las Vegas and went to Hoover Dam – or is ist Boulder Dam?
There are guided tours of the dam, but we weren’t that interested so we just walked over the dam into Arizona and then back to Nevada. The border is in the middle of the dam, and there are clocks on both ends showing the local time. Arizona is an hour ahead of Nevada, but only in winter. During summer, Nevada is on daylight savings time, but Arizona isn’t. But that’s not quite true: In fact, part of Arizona does have daylight savings time. The Navajo Nation is an hour ahead of the rest of Arizona during the summer…
We left Lake Mead, and André drove to Kingman while I was sleeping. Then we switched, and I got to drive along the historic Route 66!
Early in the evening we arrived in Tusayan, a little town near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It got dark already, and when we finally had found a hotel room and went to get some dinner, the few restaurants were all closed and we had to go to McDonald’s for hamburgers – it was the only time we ate at McDonald’s on the whole trip!
Before going to bed, we watched bats and moths flying around the lamps that illuminated the hotel garden. The bats darted around catching insects or whatever they have for dinner…
